Mud, momentum and meaning: What Weekend Warrior teaches us about showing up fully

Otto1890 Weekend Warrior

“Being out there with my son, the Otto1890 team and our clients, all of us covered in mud and laughing about it, was something pretty special. You don’t get those moments behind a desk.” Flynn Robson, Head: Private Clients

Some brand moments are built in boardrooms. Others are built on muddy trails, in difficult weather, alongside clients, colleagues, families and communities who choose to keep going when turning back would be easier.

Weekend Warrior was exactly that kind of moment.

It was wet. It was cold. It was tough. At times, it was probably the kind of weather that made even the most committed riders question their life choices. But somewhere between the mud, the climbs, the laughter and the finish line, something powerful happened: Otto1890 showed up, not just as a headline sponsor, but as a team, a partner and a brand that lives its values in the real world.

For Flynn, the experience was deeply personal and proudly collective. He described the weekend as “brilliant…tough during some parts, but brilliant.” The weather did not make it easy. There were moments when riders questioned whether day two was even a good idea. But that, in many ways, became part of the story.

“Being out there with my son, the Otto1890 team and our clients, all of us covered in mud and laughing about it, was something pretty special,” he reflected. “It was a proper shared adventure, and I believe everyone walked away with a few stories to tell.”

That is the power of experiences like Weekend Warrior. They create moments that cannot be manufactured. They take relationships out of meeting rooms and email threads and place them into a shared human experience where people connect through effort, humour, resilience and trust.

For our head of Private Clients Enablement, Claudius Rostoll, the weekend also demonstrated something important about client relationships. His guests thoroughly enjoyed the event, with the hospitality, branding and Otto1890 kit leaving a strong impression despite the difficult conditions. But his biggest highlight was not on the trail. It was around the dinner table on Saturday night.

That evening became a moment of real connection. Stories were shared, conversations deepened and by the drive home, he could hear that something had shifted. His guests spoke about the Otto1890 team with more familiarity. A connection had been made…and that matters.

Because in our world, relationships are not built only through reports, portfolios and performance updates. They are built through consistency, trust and shared moments. They are built when people see who we are beyond the formalities.

As Flynn put it: “Our relationships with people are built on so much more than spreadsheets and reports, they’re built on real moments like these.” That sentiment sits at the heart of why this partnership matters for us.

For our CEO, Erol Zeki, Weekend Warrior is a natural fit for our brand because it reflects a community of driven people who balance performance, wellbeing and long-term goals. In many ways, it mirrors the clients we serve and the kind of business we are building.

It is not simply about placing our logo at an event. It is about aligning with something that authentically reflects our philosophy on investing and life. Weekend Warrior speaks to preparation. It speaks to discipline. It speaks to perseverance. But more than that, it speaks to being human at heart.

Erol highlighted the energy and inclusivity of the event. It brought together serious riders, families, first-timers and supporters, all sharing the same experience. It was competitive, but not exclusive. Challenging, but welcoming. Demanding, but deeply human.

That is a powerful combination.

It also reflects how we think about long-term investing. Success is rarely built in one dramatic moment. It is built through consistency. It is built through resilience. It is built by adapting when conditions change and continuing to move forward when things become uncomfortable.

Weekend Warrior gave us a physical expression of those principles.

You cannot bluff your way through a steep climb, a technical single track section or a difficult second day. The trail will reveal whether you prepared. It will test your discipline. It will ask whether you have the perseverance to keep going when stopping feels tempting.

The same is true in life. The same is true in investing. The same is true in building a business with purpose.

Claudius captured this beautifully when he reflected on how the event brought Otto1890’s values to life. Families, clients and colleagues did not just participate. They showed up fully. Even when the weather made it difficult. Even when others chose not to continue. Even when the conditions were far from ideal.

That stormy Sunday became more than a race day. It became a reminder of what commitment looks like.

It was also a reminder that we operate in real communities, not just in financial markets. Our work is deeply connected to families, trusted relationships, referrals, conversations and the human moments that shape confidence over time.

That is why Weekend Warrior matters. It gives us a platform to be visible, yes. But more importantly, it gives us a platform to be present.

Present with our clients.

Present with our colleagues.

Present with families.

Present in the communities we want to build long-term relationships with.

There are also important lessons as we look ahead. The next Weekend Warrior race takes place in October in Stellenbosch, and this gives us a meaningful opportunity to build on what worked, strengthen our regional presence and show up even more intentionally.

If the first event gave us mud, momentum and meaning, Stellenbosch gives us the chance to turn that energy into something even bigger.

As we prepare for October, the challenge is not simply to be there. It is to be visible, engaged and connected. To bring our people closer to the experience. To create more moments where clients meet the faces behind the business. To ensure that our sponsorship continues to feel personal, purposeful and unmistakably Otto1890.

Because at our best, this is who we are:

Human at heart.

Showing up fully.

Keeping our word since it is our bond.

Staying curious.

Built for the long term.

Weekend Warrior reminded us that these values are not just words on a page. They are lived in moments of mud, effort, laughter and perseverance; and sometimes, the most powerful brand story is not the one we tell…it is the one people experience with us.

As we look ahead to the next Weekend Warrior race, we want to build on the energy, connection and momentum. To learn more about the race, click here. If you would like to know more about the October event and invite clients, please contact the Marketing team.
