Disciplined investing, thoughtful risk and long-term outcomes

When Sasfin Asset Managers was named runner-up at this year’s Raging Bull Awards, it was a proud moment for our team. Industry recognition always matters. It affirms the work, the discipline and the consistency that go into managing our clients’ capital. But beyond the trophy and the applause, the real story is this: what does this recognition say about how we invest every single day?

This year, the Sasfin BCI High Yield Fund was nominated for Best SA Interest Bearing Fund, and Sasfin Asset Managers for Manager of the Year. Being named runner-up is an achievement we value deeply. Yet for us, it’s less about the accolade and more about what it reflects; a philosophy that has remained steady through changing markets, shifting cycles and heightened volatility.

A philosophy that doesn’t waver

Arno Lawrenz, Chief Investment Officer at Sasfin Asset Managers, believes the recognition is meaningful because it acknowledges a philosophy that has stood the test of time.

“These nominations are a meaningful affirmation of our philosophy that has remained consistent over time,” he explains. “It’s about disciplined decision-making, rigorous risk management, only taking the appropriate risk at the appropriate time, and a strong focus on delivering sustainable outcomes for clients across market cycles.”

In a world where markets can tempt investors into chasing short-term gains, staying disciplined is not always the easy route. But it is the right one.

Our long-term investment success has never been built on taking unnecessary risks. Instead, it rests on a repeatable, research-driven process. It’s an “all things considered” approach weighing opportunities carefully, stress-testing assumptions and always asking whether a decision aligns with clients’ objectives.

The nomination of the Sasfin BCI High Yield Fund reflects our ability to navigate complex and often volatile market environments while remaining true to that philosophy. It also speaks to the strength and depth of the team behind the fund something we are particularly proud of, especially given the number of nominations we’ve received over the past few years.

Performance excellence, but not at any cost

At the heart of our investment approach are three simple but powerful principles:

  • Delivering superior returns but not at any cost
  • Taking the appropriate risk at the appropriate time
  • Applying a robust, repeatable investment process

These principles aren’t marketing slogans. They shape every portfolio decision we make. “Investment excellence isn’t flashy,” says Lawrenz. “It’s about staying measured when markets are volatile, making informed decisions and focusing on long-term objectives.”

For our clients, that translates into something tangible: performance excellence combined with prudent stewardship. It’s the careful balance between income generation and capital preservation. It’s knowing when to lean into opportunity and when to step back.

What this means for our clients

For clients, recognition like this is ultimately about outcomes rather than accolades.

“This acknowledgement reflects the consistency, discipline and resilience we’ve brought to managing funds, particularly during periods of heightened market stress,” Lawrenz explains. “It also acknowledges the trust our clients place in us to manage their capital responsibly.” That trust is something we never take lightly.

Managing fixed income portfolios in South Africa means navigating shifting interest rate cycles, liquidity dynamics and economic uncertainty. Through it all, our focus remains steady: generate stable income, preserve capital and manage downside risk carefully.

The runner-up recognition reinforces that our approach is working, not just in favourable conditions, but across full market cycles.

And looking ahead? “Clients can expect nothing to change,” says Lawrenz. “The same focus that has guided us to this point staying disciplined when markets are noisy, avoiding unnecessary or inappropriate risk, and remaining focused on long-term outcomes.”

In other words, consistency remains our competitive edge.

Continuous evolution, grounded in discipline.

Of course, discipline does not mean standing still.

Investment excellence is never static. Markets evolve. Risks shift. New data sources emerge. The tools available to investors continue to expand.

To remain at the forefront, we continue to invest in our team, our research capabilities and our portfolio construction frameworks. That includes continuously revisiting how we assess risk, strengthening governance and oversight, and incorporating new insights where appropriate.

“Innovation, for us, is not about abandoning what works,” Lawrenz explains. “It’s about strengthening our ability to deliver consistent, risk-adjusted outcomes for clients in an increasingly complex investment landscape.”

We adapt. We refine. We challenge our own assumptions. But we do so without compromising the core principles that define us: disciplined execution, transparency about the risks we take and a long-term mindset.

Recognition as a moment to reflect and recommit

Being named runner-up at the Raging Bull Awards is an honour. It recognises not only performance, but the integrity of our process and the strength of our team.

Yet awards are milestones, not destinations.

For us at Sasfin Asset Managers, this moment is an opportunity to reflect, refine and recommit. Recommit to delivering performance excellence, but not at any cost. Recommit to stewarding our clients’ capital with care and discipline. Recommit to taking the appropriate risk at the appropriate time; and recommit to a robust, sustainable and repeatable investment process through all market cycles.

Behind every recognition is a team thinking critically, analysing markets carefully and putting clients first. That is the real story.

Because in the end, what matters most isn’t the title of runner-up. It’s the confidence our clients have in our ability to navigate uncertainty, protect their capital and deliver consistent outcomes over time.

And that’s exactly what we intend
